Description: Charles E. Flowers letter to his wife Carmen while he is “somewhere in France” during World War I. He writes of missing her, wondering what she is doing, and hoping the war ends soon so they can be reunited. Flowers believes Germany is continuing to fight for existence; “should she surrender it would mean her finish and of course if she keeps fighting she is bound to loose but may be able to keep intact.” “Think of standing over the wounded and seeing human blood for 12 to 18 hours per day.” Woken the night before by an alarm signaling soldiers to put on their gas masks.
