Description: A handwritten letter from Joseph T. Walker at Fort Caswell to his sister Alice Walker discussing his activities and living conditions as telegraph operator during the Civil War. He signs the letter "73," which is part of the Phillips Code developed by telegraph operators and means “My compliments” or “Best Regards.” The end of the letter includes a key for Morse Code. Included is the envelope for the American Telegraph Company, Southern District, under control and supervision of U.S. military telegraph.
