Lang's career included teaching English at Georgia Military Academy; and serving as president of the National Student Federation, as assistant to the director of the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp Education, as state administrator of the National Youth Administration for North Carolina, as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Alaska, North Africa, and Sicily during World War II, 1942-1946; as Administrative Assistant to Rep. Charles B. Deane (D-NC), 1946-1947, and to Rep. Robert E. Jones (D-AL), 1957-1961; as Deputy for Reserve and ROTC Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, 1961-1971; as an Air Force reserve major general; and finally as Vice Chancellor of East Carolina University and Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, 1971-1974.
