Names of claimants, affiants, and persons of importance are listed alphabetically with maiden names and aliases where known and cross references. Names of enslavers, if applicable, are also included. This index is part of the Frederick Douglass papers. He was a black lawyer, minister, and teacher from New Bern, N.C. During the 1880s and 1890s he handled the pension applications of many Blacks who served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during the Civil War.
