Title: Agreement between C. W. Hollowell and Anthony Johnston

Description: Memorandum of an agreement between Christopher Wilson Hollowell, executor of James C. Johnston's estate, and Anthony Johnston (1828?-), a "freedman." The agreement lays out the terms for Hollowell renting land and equipment to Anthony Johnston (1828?-) for farming and living off a portion of the former Poplar Plains Plantation. Though it is not certain the individuals are the same, there was an enslaved man skilled as a blacksmith by the name of Anthony who was sold to James C. Johnston in 1856 and who performed labor for Hollowell as well. The Hayes Collection, 1694-1928 located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill contains additional correspondence between James C. Johnston and Christopher Wilson Hollowell regarding Anthony, as well as the deed of sale that accompanied Anthony when he was sold to Johnston by the estate of Joshua Skinner. Upon the death of James C. Johnston in May 1865, Hollowell, who had managed Johnston's Pasquotank County plantations, inherited the properties known as Poplar Plains, Salem, and Body.
