Description: A congratulatory letter to John M. Burnham from Rear Admiral H. G. Rickover of the U.S. Navy concerning initial trials of the nuclear submarine Skate. Rickover also sends condolences on Burnham's recent illness. John M. Burnham was a 1941 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He joined the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation in 1947 and became design manager at Electric Boat in 1952. He was responsible for the design of the nuclear-powered submarines USS Nautilus (SSN-571), USS Seawolf (SSN-575) and USS Skate (SSN-578). He died on November 15, 1957.
