The play tells the story of Althea Randall, the daughter of a Christian missionary, who in 1885 sees her Cherokee sweetheart killed in a sawmill explosion. She devotes her life to the building of Oklahoma and the social problems of her time, and eventually goes to Congress as the first woman elected to the House of Representatives.
