Description: Memoranda from Captain Thomas Sparrow, Washington Grays, for Lieutenant William Shaw and others, August 12, 1861. In the memoranda Sparrow settles a dispute over who is in command of the post and gives instructions on how to select and train new recruits. Sparrow says to be ready to leave within 24 hours if orders come to move the company to Virginia. He also says that there must always be a commissioned officer at camp to keep order. The Civil War papers relate to the activities of Captain Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
