Description: Letter from John B. Sparrow in Washington N.C. to Miss Hoyt. Undated. Sparrow writes thanking the ladies of Washington for their token of esteem, a flag they made for his men, that is an emblem of Southern nationality and independence. He says his men are proud of the ladies, and that they will endeavor to honor the flag. They will answer the call of duty to their country with God on their side. The flag will give them courage to fight and stay at their posts. He also asks the ladies to look after the families of his men while they are away. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
