Description: Letter from Thomas Sparrow in Tarboro [N.C.] to his wife Annie Sparrow. Thomas Sparrow writes that he has been summoned to Wilmington to a General Court martial presided over by Colonel Leventhorpe that will last some weeks. He is staying in a camp near Wilmington. In the intervals between sessions Sparrow can go wherever he wants, so he decided to go to Tarboro to visit his daughter Ann. Sparrow discusses what to do with Ann while she is on vacation from school in Tarboro. He is hesitant to send her to her mother in Union occupied Washington, NC, fearing that she wouldn't be allowed to leave again. Sparrow is also unsure of what to do with their son George, saying he will take him to Wilmington when his school is over. Sparrow also writes about sending Annie money from his pay and from selling some things that she made. Sparrow offers to send Annie and their other children anything that they need. He also discusses the state of the war, saying that things look bright for the South. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
