Description: Letter from W. N. H. Smith in Richmond, VA. Smith writes that he did not receive the letter addressed to him on February 12th from Portsmouth until today because he just returned to Richmond. He says the part addressed to Captain John Markoe must have already been given to him. Smith includes an announcement that Captain John Markoe left the city that morning with other prisoners for an exchange. Smith congratulates him on his upcoming release and return to his family. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
