Description: Letter from E. J. Warren in Raleigh [N.C.] to Thomas Sparrow. Warren congratulates Sparrow on his safe return home after being released from Fort Warren in Boston, where he was held as a prisoner of war. He says that Mrs. Sparrow received Thomas Sparrow's pay until the 1st of November. She went to Raleigh in January to inquire about whether the state would continue to pay or if she needed to go to Confederate authorities. Warren inquired about it and found out that the Adjutant General had instructed not to make payments after the 1st of November. Warren says that Sparrow's power of attorney was carried to Richmond. Warren encourages Sparrow to pursue it further since he feels this is an injustice being done to Sparrow and the other Hatteras men. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
