Description: Letter from James Markoe in Philadelphia to Captain Thomas Sparrow during his imprisonment at Fort Warren in Boston. James Markoe writes that he got a letter from Washington stating that the order for Captain Sparrow's parole will be sent to Fort Warren without delay. Captain Sparrow will be exchanged with his son John Markoe. James Markoe included twenty five dollars to get Sparrow to Philadelphia by land and offered to let Sparrow stay at his house. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
