Description: Letter from Burgwyn Maitland in Baltimore [M.D.] to Captain Thomas Sparrow of Washington NC Grays during his imprisonment at Fort Warren in Boston. Maitland writes that he gave Sparrow's measurements to have an overcoat made for him. It should be ready by the next Saturday and forwarded to Sparrow. Maitland says he saw in the papers that some the Hatteras prisoners had been exchanged. He asks if Sam Williams of Washington was among them, and he says he is glad to hear that Sparrow will be exchanged soon. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
