Description: Letter from A Friend, New York, to Captain Thomas Sparrow of the "Washington Greys" during his imprisonment at Governors Island, New York. The writer says that he has taken the liberty of sending articles for Sparrow and his men even though he does not have a personal acquaintance with Sparrow. He knows of Sparrow through their mutual acquaintance Mr. Demill, and he hopes that Sparrow will accept what he sent. Some things are marked for Private S. Schenck. He says that he is sorry to learn that several of the North Carolina soldiers have died. The letter also includes a list of the articles sent, including wine and jelly to help the sick. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
