Description: Letter from Reverend W. E. Schenck, Cor. Secy., Presbyterian Board of Publication, 821 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia [PA] to Reverend Thomas G. Wall. Schenck writes that he requested the Presbyterian Board of Publication Executive Committee to make a grant of $15 worth of publications for the prisoners of war captured at Hatteras based on Wall's suggestion. The request was unanimously accepted. Schenck says that he will go ahead and send the package, and he hopes to get some acknowledgement of receipt from the prisoners. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
