Description: Letter from Captain Thomas Sparrow, of the Washington Grays, at Fort Columbus [N.Y.] to Thomas A. Demill. Sparrow writes that there are 54 prisoners of war from Beaufort County, North Carolina. Many of the men are in need of shoes, under clothes, and pants. Sparrow asks Demill to speak to some people to see if they will supply these men with clothing. Of the 600 prisoners confined in Castle Williams, 150 are sick and four have died. Only eight or ten of Sparrow's company are sick, so asks for some food to help them. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
