Description: Letter from Thomas G. Wall in Philadelphia [PA] to Captain Thomas Sparrow during his imprisonment at Governors Island, New York. Wall says that he will send Sparrow some books soon, and that the Board of Publications will send some for distribution at the fort. Wall also says that Sparrow's family got word that he was well a week after his capture at Hatteras. He promises to pass along any news he hears from Eastern North Carolina to Sparrow. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
