Description: Letter from J. G. Martin, Adjutant General, Adjutant General's Office, Raleigh [N.C.] to Captain Thomas Sparrow in Ocracoke Inlet, N.C., copy for General Gwynn in Newbern [N.C.]. Martin says that he received Sparrow's request to transfer to Colonel Tew's regiment and that it has been submitted to the governor. As soon as the Sparrow's company is enlisted he will receive orders relieving him from his current station. Martin asks that he report the names of the men who decline enlisting so that they can be sent to Captain Swindell's Company or discharged. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
