Description: Letter from James J. Leith Captain of Hyde Co. Rifles, G. W. Johnston Captain of Tar River Boys, T. H. Sharp Captain of Hertford Light Infantry, and H. A. Gilliam Captain of Morris Guards in Portsmouth, N.C. to Thomas Sparrow, Captain Washington Grays [N.C.]. Four company commanders in Portsmouth write to Captain Sparrow about using the hospital building for the sick instead of as quarters. They feel that they can not provide suitable medical attention for sick men in their camps, and want to send them all to one place where the surgeon can care for them more easily. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
