Description: Letter from Thomas Sparrow, Senior Captain at Camp Washington in Portsmouth, N.C. to Dr. Edward Warren, 1st Surgeon in the Navy. Captain Sparrow writes to Dr. Warren to inform him that he has vacated his quarters so that they can be used as a hospital for the sick soldiers. Captain Sparrow also says that Dr. Warren's own quarters need to be vacated to house the Chaplain Reverend Best or he could house Best in the hospital building. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
