Description: Letter from Thomas Sparrow, Senior Captain Commanding Forces at Ocracoke Inlet, at Camp Washington, N.C. to Edward Warren M.D., First Surgeon in the Navy & to the Port of Ocracoke & its Dependencies [N.C.]. Captain Sparrow writes to Dr. Warren to inform him that he has vacated his quarters so that they can be used as a hospital for the sick soldiers. Captain Sparrow also says that Dr. Warren's own quarters need to be vacated to house the Chaplain Reverend Best. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
