Description: Letter from Dan Reid in Washington, N.C. to Captain Thomas Sparrow, Commander of the Washington Grays. Reid writes that he is sorry to hear that Captain Sparrow has consented to go to Virginia and that all of his friends in Washington disapprove. Reid goes on to say that Sparrow's post in Portsmouth is important and that they have more confidence in him than the other officers. Reid describes Sparrow as always being sober, brave, and discreet. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
