Description: Letter from Captain Thomas Sparrow at New Bern, N.C. to Lieutenant William Shaw. Captain Sparrow says that he went to New Bern to request a court martial but the General was away, so he says that Lt. Shaw will have to hold the usual company court martial. Sparrow then discusses the Regiments that have openings that his company could join, and he discusses going to Raleigh to find out if his Regiment, the 7th Regiment Volunteers, will be disbanded. Sparrow mentions some of the supplies he hopes to procure and bring back with him. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
