Description: Lletter from Captain Thomas Sparrow in Fort Ocracoke B Island, N.C. to F. B. Satterthwaite. Sparrow responds to a previous letter from Satterthwaite urging him to leave Portsmouth. In this letter Captain Sparrow explains the difficulties with agreeing to Satterthwaite's proposal. Sparrrow says that he is now the Commander of Fort Ocracoke and of all the forces in Portsmouth. Sparrow details his situation in Portsmouth and explains why he turned down an offer to join McRea's Regiment. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
