Description: Letter from F. B. Satterthwaite in Raleigh, N.C. to Captain Thomas Sparrow in Portsmouth, N.C. Satterhwaite says that he has heard news about Sparrow's company from his son William. He then discusses the unlikelihood of Sparrow's company winning glory or being involved in any engagements in Portsmouth, but says they will remain there unless they agree to go into active service. Satterhwaite says that all of the glory is in Virginia and Maryland, and he urges Captain Sparrow not to remain in Portsmouth. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
