Description: Letter from David M. Carter in Washington, N.C. to Captain Thomas Sparrow. Carter tells Sparrow that he is going to Raleigh to meet Colonel George B. Anderson of the 4th Infantry Regiment. While preparing to go to Virginia, Carter discovered a dozen of his men who are not suitable to go. Carter asks if any of the young men in Sparrow's Company want to go to Virginia with his company. Carter then apologizes for some of his boasting about his better luck going to Virginia rather than Portsmouth. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
