Description: Letter from M. M. Fowle in Washington, N.C. to Captain Thomas Sparrow. Fowle writes to tell Captain Sparrow that while preparing for his regiment to depart, they forgot to prepare a cover for their flag. Fowle relates that they had a flag cover made, and tells Sparrow to make sure the flag is sunned occasionally so that it won't spot. Fowle also mentions the ladies in Washington sending bouquets of flowers to the Washington Grays and receiving men from the Greenville, N.C. company in Washington. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
