Description: Letter from [?] in New York to Captain Thomas Sparrow at Fort Warren in Boston, Massachusetts during his time as a prisoner at Fort Warren. The letter informs Sparrow that his wife, children, and relatives in Illinois are well. Sparrow was commissioned a captain in a NC Regiment of the Confederate Army in 1861 and served at Fort Hatteras until he was taken prisoner by Union forces in August of that year. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
