Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at camp with the Army of the Pamlico near Kinston, NC to his mother Annie Mariah Blackwell Sparrow in Washington, NC. George writes to his mother that he is sending her a letter by Captain Reid who is leaving for Washington. George says that the Captain and Lieutenant in his company declined election and are going to leave. George doesn’t like being ranked under people he does not consider his equal let alone superior and he wants to get out of it, but he is supposed to stay for nine months. The only way he thinks he can is if he has his father’s help in getting a different position. George then asks his mother to send a friend’s fiddle, shirts, and some stationary. He plans to save his money and give it to her when he comes home. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
