Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at the Hillsborough Military Academy to his father Thomas Sparrow. George writes to his father and thanks him for sending twenty dollars and a bag of clothes. George discusses the military situation in Eastern North Carolina. He heard that there are 1600 Federal troops in Scotland Neck and that a battle is expected daily. In response to the invasion of the state and their homes, the Cadets at the academy have decided to form themselves into a company or Cadet Corps for a month or more to aid in the expulsion of the enemy. George says that he has not decided to join them unless he gets his father’s permission, and that he thinks it will be a failure. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
