Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at the Hillsborough Military Academy to his father Thomas Sparrow. George writes to tell his father that he has gotten into trouble at the academy. He and some of the other cadets went down to the depot to watch the trains and a sentinel reported them absent from barracks. They were all put under arrest but allowed to stay. George relates this incident as a reason why he shouldn’t remain in school. He thinks his father is wasting money by sending him there because it is not a good school and he can’t get any studying done. More than half of the cadets are leaving in response to another boy being sent home. George says that they will not allow him to leave unless his father consents, so he asks him to send a discharge as soon as possible. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
