Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at the Hillsborough Military Academy to his father Thomas Sparrow. George tells his father that he received his letter that included a letter from his mother and a newspaper. George mentions seeing a speech given by Governor Edward Stanly, appointed the military governor of eastern North Carolina by President Abraham Lincoln, and says that Stanly will regret it when the South wins the war. George also mentions that he received a letter from Mary Ellison saying that two young men left to join his father’s company. He also heard that three men from Goldsboro are on their way to join his company. George then asks for money so that he can visit family on his ten day holiday. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
