Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at the Hillsborough Military Academy to his father Thomas Sparrow. George tells his father that he would prefer to be in his county’s service in the war, but he will put up with staying at the academy because that is what his father wishes. George also tells his father not to send any of his stuff because he is only allowed to wear the clothes furnished to him by the academy. George asks his father to send for him if his mother and the children get out of Washington, NC so that he can see them. He also wants his sister Annie to write him often. George also asks for his father’s opinion of his plan to stay at the academy until the end of the session on July 31st and then get a place as a drill master in the Army. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
