Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow in Washington, NC to his father Thomas Sparrow. George tells his father about news of what happened at the First Battle of Bull Run in Virginia. He says that the Union regiment of Zouaves formerly commanded by Colonel Ellsworth with 1200 men now only has 200 men. They were a retreat of the Federal Army they were overtaken by a group of Texas Rangers and cut to pieces. George says he saw a letter from the President that estimated Confederate losses at 500 killed, 1500 wounded and the Union losses at seven or eight thousand killed and wounded with a lot of captured prisoners. The Confederates captured sixty one pieces of artillery along with wagons, baggage, and provisions. They also captured General Scott’s carriage and horses. Some people came as spectators to watch the defeat of the Confederates and were then almost captured when the Federal Army retreated and the Confederates pursued. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
