Tobacco Shipment
Title: Tobacco Shipment
Identifier: 0154-s7-b21-fe   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/23552)
Description: A shipment of tobacco in hogshead barrels arrives at the Greenville Port Terminal in the 1940s. The port came about after the formation of the Tar River Port Commission in 1938. The river was dredged in 1939 from Washington, North Carolina, to Hardee's Creek in Pitt County. Warehouses and docks were soon constructed as well. The port opened in 1940 and saw much business. World War II, however, caused the port to close within two years. In later years, silt had covered the once-dredged channel again, and the port was never reopened due to limits of profitability. Date approximated.
