Description: Faculty members from the East Carolina University Maritime History and Underwater Archaeology program hoist the anchor of the USS Monitor into a steel barrel for conservation work at the ECU powerplant. The Civil War ironclad USS Monitor sank during a storm off the North Carolina coast in 1862. A 1983 expedition led by Gordon Watts recovered the anchor. In the photograph are Dr. William N. Still, Jr., Maritime Historian and Professor in the Department of History 1968-1994; Dr. Gordon P. Watts, Jr., Assistant Professor of History and co-director of the program in Maritime History and Underwater Research 1981-2001; John Little; and a reporter watching them.
