Description: Martens was a metallurgical engineer. He designed a microscope specifically for metallurgical photography in 1896, which was slightly modified over the next 30 years. The Martens microscope was horizontally mounted on a large, heavy, floor standing optical bench along with its illumination system and a large view camera. Two of the heavy-duty condenser and diaphragms came with this instrument. A carbon arc similar to A24 was typically used as the light source. The serial number is 71516.
