Description: Electric lamps did not become commonly used for microscope illumination until about 1920. Commonly used sources of lighting included sun light, oil lamps, gas lamps and arcs for high intensity. These oil lamps were specifically made for microscopy. Many had porcelain shades with a rectangular aperture to block extraneous light. They were usually used with a bull's eye condensor lens. These were likely created by J. Swift & Son.
