Description: In 1854 the Society of Arts offered a prize for the design of an inexpensive student microscope meeting their specifications. R. Field of Birmingham won with a bar-limb design. Variations on his design were manufactured for 50 years. This is an early example with a nonstandard (not RMS) objective thread. Stage forceps for holding small objects like insects are installed on this instrument. The outer case and bottom lens of the objective is removable to have a lower power.
