Description: Dr. Newsom Jones Pittman was a country doctor from near Tarboro, North Carolina. He lived from 1818 to 1893. Dr. Pittman sold all of his land in order to be able to attend school at the University of Pennsylvania. As part of his education Dr. Pittman studied in several European cities, including Paris. This instrument case was presented to him in Paris. It was made especially for L’Institut de Chirugie (Department of Surgery) at L’École De médecine (School of Medicine) at what is today L'université René Descartes, or the University of Paris. The case was manufactured by Lüer in Paris, France. The instruments that Dr. Pittman actually carried in this small case were made in cities throughout Europe, though most of them were made in Paris or London.
