Description: In the late 1700s manufacturers in Bristol, England, discovered a formula for incorporating cobalt oxide into flint glass to give it a brilliant blue color. The collection at Hope Mansion includes glasses and rinsers which were used to wash out and cool glasses between courses of wine. These would have been reserved for formal dining occasions with guests. The accompanying video describes their use and plantation dining customs. Date approximated.
