Washstand
Title: Washstand
Identifier: Historic Hope Plantation   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/14318)
Description: Since houses in the 1800s had no bathrooms, bedchambers were often equipped with a washstand. This washstand would have held a bowl and a pitcher with water for watching, a shaving mug, a razor, and other toiletry items. An enslaved house servant would have poured hot water into the stand before the family washed and then cleaned the area after. The accompanying video describes the stand and the process of washing in more detail. Date approximated.
