Description: This model is a R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company cutter and was used to cut the brand Brown's Mule tobacco in 1 inch or 2 inch plugs. In the early 20th century, tobacco was packaged much differently then it is today. Country stores would receive a “cake” of tobacco. Most stores owned a commercial tobacco cutter that was used for cutting the “cake” into pieces of plug chewing tobacco. The “cake” would be cut in half and then those halves would be cut in half, and so on, until the desired amount was achieved. These smaller pieces would sell for five to ten cents in the country store.
