Mrs. Williams discusses growing up during the Depression in a large family in Rocky Mount, N.C., where her father was a teacher. She discusses staying with a brother in Greenville while she attended classes, meeting her husband on a blind date when she was a freshman, paying tuition with $400 she won in an essay contest, majoring in math and science, and being offered a scholarship to Peabody College in Nashville that she had to decline because she had gotten married. Interviewer: Donald R. Lennon.
