Description: Correspondence of William L. Spoon (1862-1942), a surveyor, teacher, inventor, map maker, traveling salesman, and later, supervisor of public roads in Alamance County, N.C. Correspondence in this folder concerns his work as a surveyor in Burlington, N.C., and his life in Moody, Tex., where he taught school and worked on a press to revolutionize the cotton industry. Included in this correspondence are comments on the climate in Texas, farm machinery used to harvest crops, and corn prices. Of particular interest is the observation that people were burning their corn as fuel since prices on it were too low to warrant shipping it to market. A letter to former members of the Dialectic Society at the University of North Carolina mentions the centennial celebration of the University, from which Spoon graduated in 1891.
