The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. This collection contains the society's official records, brochures, event programs, and publications related to research, community events and sponsored projects.
The collection includes correspondence, minutes, programs, lists, dues information, journal reprints and articles, newsletters, receipts, clippings, reports, and photographs. Addition of January 2017 includes programs, newsletters, photographs, books, articles, clippings, deceased members files, Country Doctor Museum and East Carolina University alliance, and transcription project of the Country Doctor Museum oral histories.
Papers (1830-1883, 1994) including original letters relating to family matters, Civil War, etc. (12 letters and 2 envelopes) and transcripts of correspondence, 1830-1883, and genealogical documents from a loose leaf notebook (146 pages) compiled by Laura (Foster) Renard, Christmas 1994.
This candid and detailed World War I diary (April 25, 1918-March 12, 1919) was kept by Carl Whittlesey of Barton County, MO, during his service with the 313 Engineers 88th Division. He kept detailed entries regarding his training at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa, his participation in the Alsace Campaign in France, and his involvement in developing the war ravaged areas in Europe.
This collection contains eight 8" by 6" photographs (ca. 1910) mounted on cardboard taken by an unknown photographer of identified buildings, street scenes and the Confederate Monument in Windsor, N.C. The photographs were probably taken for Grady T. Davis, Sr.
Papers (1831-1946) including correspondence, legal and financial papers, newspapers, articles on local business, hotels, banks, and miscellaneous.
Papers (1767-1976) of three generations of Beaufort County, NC, lawyers named William B. Rodman, including correspondence, letterpress books, speeches, financial records, legal files, farm records, clippings, printed material, newspapers, photographs, genealogical material and miscellaneous. Originally from New York, the Rodmans married into the prominent Blount family in Beaufort County, NC. The Rodmans also held local and state government offices and were judges.
Records (1888-1995, undated) of Roanoke Island Baptist Church, including copies of deeds and plat, correspondence, church histories, newsletter, and church manuscript record volumes, including minutes of conference minutes, treasurer's reports, Sunday School treasurer's reports, Women's Missionary Society.
This collection (1823-1999) contains the papers of Robert "Bob" Boyd Robinson III. Robinson, born in 1948 in Halifax County, N.C., was a member of various groups including the Sons of the Revolution in the State of North Carolina. His papers include materials related to various families of Northeastern North Carolina and Southeastern Virginia.
Two minute books (September 1874-January 1949) for the Conoho Primitive Baptist Church that was located near Oak City, Martin County, North Carolina. The church was founded in 1794 by former members of Flat Swamp Church. The church building was torn down ca. 1970, leaving a cemetery still in existence.
Contained in the collection are notebooks, pamphlets, photographs and negatives from Boice's time at the University of Pennsylvania and his career afterwards.
Willard and Daisy Rowe Papers (1963-2006) contain newsletters,clippings, publications and a poster documenting the work of the Evangelical Baptist Mission in Franklin County, North Carolina, and in Guatemala.
The Charles S. Sterrett Collection contains one print of the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) from 1945.
Papers (1941-1954, 1981-1994) including correspondence, transcripts, certificates, publications, photographs, a map, fact sheets, and a magazine article.
Printed materials (Sept. 1999 - May 2000) including copies of Pieces of Eight, and The East Carolinian, containing articles on Hurricane Floyd and the flood that followed, football tickets, and a copy of the program for the ECU v. University of Miami football game.
