Itinerant Photographer Diary

Diary (1845-1847) kept by a traveling New York daguerreotypist whose identity is unknown. He traveled throughout Eastern North Carolina (October 1846-January 1847) and wrote down his impressions of Edenton, Plymouth, Williamston, Greenville and Washington, North Carolina, as well as Norfolk, Virginia. A small portion of the diary includes instructions on how to clean daguerreotype plates and take good portraits.

North Carolina First Flight Centennial Commission

This collection (2001-2008) has printed material, minutes, correspondence, ephemera and other documents donated by Dr. Keats Sparrow who participated as a member of the North Carolina First Flight Commission and its Education Committee during the 100th Anniversary celebration of the First Flight. The collection also contains a 2003 commemorative booklet "First Flight Visions celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight," information from the International Commission's 2001 Flight Symposium about the Wright Brothers, photographs, clippings, and brochures. Other items are a travel mug, automobile license plate, pins, shoulder patches and commemorative items.

U.S. Brig Dragoon Journal

This collection contains a journal (December 15, 1861-April 15, 1865) kept by Isaac Liscomb, Master (Commander) of the U.S. Brig Dragoon. Dragoon was a private merchant vessel (formerly called the Remington) leased or purchased by the Union Army for use in the Civil War. As part of General Burnside's fleet, the Dragoon was involved in the Battle of Roanoke Island. Liscomb kept detailed accounts of that battle and of the voyages the ship made during the Civil War to transport troops and supplies to ports including Port Royal and Folly Island (SC), Pensacola (FL), and Morehead City (NC).

The Wright Brothers Envelope Collection contains one First Day Cover envelope (December 17, 1948) with a cachet entitled "Commemorating the Return of 'The Kitty Hawk' Wright Brothers' Plane" and postmarked at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
