This collection (1821-2007) contains several groups of family history-related papers concerning eastern North Carolina and a large number of unrelated miscellaneous items such as photographs, church records, Bible records, and rare printed items on a variety of subjects. The majority of the family papers concern the Croom and Whitfield families of Lenoir County, N.C. Other family papers concern the Harvey family of Greene County, N.C., the Jordan and Waters families of Washington, N.C., the Meeks family of Pitt County, the Outlaw family of Lenoir County and the Thompson family of Georgia. A large part of this collection concerns the Ficklen family of Greenville, N.C., including scrapbooks, diaries, an autograph book and a post card collection. Some items concern the colorful poet, magazine editor, railroad speculator, paper mill owner, Civil War blockade-runner, and sea captain Appleton Oaksmith who lived in Carteret County, N.C., for fifteen years (1872-1887). Also included are ambrotype photographs of Confederate Civil War soldiers James Needham Alexander, who served in Company A, 11th North Carolina Troops (Infantry) and Stanhope Washington Alexander, who served in Company H, 35th North Carolina Regiment.

Papers (1794-1972) consisting of correspondence, diaries, letters, financial papers, legal papers, manuscripts, publications, speeches, notes, etc.

The collection consists of a volume (circa 1897) containing the constitution and bylaws for the Pitt County Medical Society (North Carolina) and also the society's "black list" of patients.

In this oral history Phillip Dixon, Sr. talks about his childhood, time as a student and Student Government Association Vice President at East Carolina University, service on the the UNC Board of Governors and ECU Board of Trustees, legal career, and family life.

The collection includes papers and publications produced or related to the administration of John Decatur Messick. Materials include biographical records, correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, administrative records, and other miscellaneous items.

This collection contains a disassembled scrapbook created by Dr. F.M. Simmons Patterson. It is composed of photographs, correspondence, writings, publications, and other documentation of his career.

Jessamine Shumate (1902-1990), a native of Henry County, Virginia, was an artist, historian, and cartographer. She died in Greenville, North Carolina, where her daughters were living.

Papers (1870-1981) including correspondence, legal documents, ledgers, literary manuscripts, stock certificates, deeds, charters, minutes, photographs, clippings, financial records, orders and publications.

Material (1844-1891) including correspondence, account books, speeches, pamphlets, receipts, legal papers, and publications concerning William Robinson (an Irish immigrant) who was a newspaper publisher, town commissioner and mayor of Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina, and his son Dr. Marius Emmet Robinson who practiced in Goldsboro, operated a drugstore with his brother, and was the first chief of staff of Goldsboro's first hospital.

Personal files (1939-1989), related to Leo Warren Jenkins outside of his positions at East Carolina University (and when it was called East Carolina College), including correspondence, clippings, reports, a manuscript, photographs, ephemera, programs, and U.S. Marine Corps documents and WWII service medals.

This collection contains publications, reports, self-studies, and other records related to the administration and operation of the Office of Continuing Studies at East Carolina University.

Papers (1736–2018) including correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, personal and family materials, printed materials, and photographic materials collected by E. Frank Stephenson Jr. relating to the Benjamin B. Winborne Family, the R. J. Gatling Family, E. Frank Stephenson Jr., and other people in North Carolina and Virginia, especially the Murfreesboro, North Carolina, area. The documents were collected by E. Frank Stephenson Jr. for research use while writing numerous historical publications and to make the items available for other researchers to utilize. Many of Mr. Stephenson's publications are also included in the collection.
