Papers of James Dickey (1950-1994) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Atlanta, Georgia-born American poet, novelist and essayist, including correspondence, manuscripts, photographic prints, proofs of published works, reviews of published materials, printed material, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection and oversized materials, by or about James Dickey, Louis Untermeyer, and others.

714 items (1775-1895) including estate papers, deeds, correspondence, chattel mortgages, tax lists, accounts, distillery tax returns, promissory notes, receipts and ledgers documenting the Tyndall, Kinsey, Sparrow, Williams and Noble families.

Items related to Dr. Robert Kornegay and his father Dr. Lemuel W. Kornegay, co-founder of Rocky Mount Sanitarium.

Collection includes two folders of 48 items primarily of correspondence, letters and financial documents for a transport business that shipped commodities by riverboat.

Papers (2/23/1862 - 12/26/1868) consisting of a pocket notebook belonging to James H. Mills, Sergeant of Company I, 44th Regiment North Carolina Troops, the "Eastern Tigers," a unit recruited in Pitt County, including orders, inventories, muster and supplies lists related to the Civil War and a few post-war account records.

The bulk of the Raymond J. Kragness Papers (1943-1946, 2000, 2004) pertains to Mr. Kragness's service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II aboard the USS Escambia. Personal items include rites of passage membership cards (such as crossing the Equator), draft board notification, photographs, post cards of San Francisco Bay, course certificates, separation from service records and a brief family history. The remaining items pertain to his service on the USS Escambia, a fleet oiler. Included are the ship's history and directory, newsletter "Eighty Times," a list of ships fuled by the USS Escambia, plans of the day, congratulatory messages from Admiral Halsey, and invitations and tickets for commissioning and decommissioning ceremonies.

The collection contains materials used for research and display in the Country Doctor Museum's "Art of Nursing" exhibit.

Organization records (1955-1980), including correspondence, minutes, constitution and by-laws, membership lists, agenda, memorial, resolutions, financial records, and miscellaneous.

Papers (1946-1948) obtained by Richard Dillard Dixon, Jr., while visiting his father Richard Dillard Dixon, Sr., who participated in the of International Military Tribunal (for Nazi war crimes) held in Nuremberg, Germany, as a member of the judges Secretariat and as a judge. Included are mimeographed transcripts of some of the trials and related manuscripts, press releases, and wall charts delineating the hierarchy of Nazi German government and military system. Other papers (1870-1970) concern the life of Edenton, N.C., attorney, insurance agent, wholesale oil salesman and civic activist Richard Dillard Dixon, Jr.

Papers (1915-1975) of Edenton NC Funeral parlor operators, including correspondence, funeral service ledger, photographs, and miscellany. 200 items.

The majority of the collection relates to Captain Leslie Avery Shaw's military service in the U.S. Army, especially during World War II when he served in the 11th AAA, 49th AAA Brigade, VII Corps, U.S. First Army in Europe. Included are maps and overlays concerning operations at Utah Beach at Normandy, orders, citations, reports, photographs, letters, postcards, military ribbons and insignia, and items from his personal military file. Additional items including many photographs document his personal life after the war. Photographs, printed material and memorabilia from the 1950s and early 1960s relate to the early years of his son Robert Avery Shaw's life in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Ammons (1954-1993, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Whiteville, North Carolina-born American poet and creative writing educator at Cornell University; consisting of correspondence, proofs of published material, printed materials and oversized materials; also including loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection relating to Stuart Wright's research on A. R. Ammons.

Papers (1827-1964) including correspondence, speeches, legal papers, deeds, clippings, financial papers, photographs, telephone and telegram company, and miscellaneous. 8,300 items. Recd. 11/5/1979 11/15/1979

The bulk of this donation is photographs relating to the Hertford County, North Carolina, Crawford and Riddick family ancestors of William Crawford Woods. He was the son of Louise Russell Crawford and Arthur R. Woods, Jr. and the grandson of Kate Wallace Riddick and Louis Russell Crawford. The Wallace side of the family is from Norfolk County, Virginia. Additionally, there are personal items, including correspondence, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, school notes, publications, and some legal records. The items included date back to the late 1800s up through the mid-1900s.
